With Gartner’s recent coverage of this emerging area, in a new Magic Quadrant report, the message to CIOs and CDOs as well as Information Compliance and Governance Officers is clear: “The growing need for organizations to treat information as an asset is making metadata management strategic, driving significant growth for metadata management solutions.”

5 Use Cases for Applying Ontologies in your IT

Posted by Pete Rivett on May 18, 2016 5:14:08 PM

Use Case #1. The Business Glossary BI Reports without thoroughly understood ‘metric definitions’ and ‘metric calculations’ to support them, stored in a ‘Business Metrics Glossary’, run the risk of being systematically sub-optimized. Leveraging the power of industry specific domain ontologies (freely available and free to use) will considerably cut down the time you have to spend on both modelling the problem and arguing about meaning. What price would you put on gaining information assurance in your BI Reporting?

Defining Irony: How the NSA made ‘metadata’ mainstream with an incorrect definition

Posted by Daragh O’Brien on May 4, 2016 10:30:00 AM

What is metadata? All too often when I ask this question of technologist colleagues I get bombarded with an array of definitions, the only unifying characteristic of which is that they fail to evoke relevance for me from a busy business manager’s perspective.

“Metadata is data about data,” I’m told. “Metadata is data that provides information about other data.” I chortle at this because one of the overlaps between my legal training and my years of experience in data modelling is that it is always an error to define something with reference to itself, and these definitions sound very recursive. Also, this definition causes those of us who are not information-centric or technology-biased thinkers to switch off. Data is the job of the IT department after all, right?
